ASEAN Haze Portal
Under the framework of the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (AATHP), the ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy 2006-2020 (APMS) and the ASEAN Programme on Sustainable Management of Peatland Ecosystems 2014-2020 (APSMPE), the ASEAN Secretariat, with the support from the European Union (EU), Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is implementing peatland projects namely the Measurable Action for Haze-Free Southeast Asia (MAHFSA) Programme, The Sustainable Use of Peatland and Haze Mitigation in ASEAN (SUPA) and complemented by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded Project, the Sustainable Management of Peatland Ecosystems in Mekong Countries (Mekong Peatlands Project) implemented by IUCN. All these programmes are aiming to assist the ASEAN Member States (AMS) to implement the above regional policies.
Global Environment Centre (GEC)
Global Environment Centre (GEC) is an award-winning Malaysian non-profit organisation established in 1998 to work on environmental issues of global and local importance. GEC works regionally and internationally both directly and through many partners making its mark as a leader both in policy making and on-the-ground action to conserve and restore river, peatland and forest ecosystems. It works in partnership with other like-minded agencies worldwide. It focusses on a community-based approach to natural resource management and environmental protection and has worked with thousands of community members and volunteers to support action in Malaysia and throughout Southeast Asia.
GEC was recognised by the Malaysian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in 2020 as a role model for non-governmental organisations (NGO) in recognition of the organisation’s mangrove forest rehabilitation efforts and in 2022 was awarded the 2022 Merdeka Award in the Environment Category.
